Tatto

It's not really known how long tattooing has been around but it's quite possibly as long as 12,000 years ago and we do know the ancient Egyptians practiced the art of tattooing.

One may think the art of tattooing has its history mainly with men. Not so. Women from various cultures tattooed their bodies for a variety of reasons. Take the women from Borneo. They would mark themselves to show what they were skilled at, such as weaving or a gatherer of medicinal herbs. This communicated their rank as marriage material. In western Asia, girls were marked in such a way as to show their place in society.

Tattooing has gone through its ups and downs over the centuries, has even been banned many times in different cultures for periods of time. It appears that tattooing will never really go away. During periods of a ban it seems to go underground until such time it is free to resurface.

Tattooing, (which is a Tahitian word meaning "to be marked") in some cultures, has only the women being allowed to do the markings.

Today's women are free to make their own choices in regards to tattooing. It is becoming more and more popular to have artistic designs placed just about anywhere on the body. You commonly see tattoos adorning an ankle, or husbands or boyfriends names on a forearm. Some women like to have a private tattoo for their spouse only.

Cloud 10's Think Tank (SOUND OFF) Why Are Designer Clothes So Expensive?

I was browsing the net yesterday and found this very interesting article in the New York Times about why a pair of designer khaki pants were so expensive.  The NY Times writer interviewed several high end designers to understand how they justify the exorbitant prices they charge for their clothes.  I have always argued that if you want great quality clothing that possesses a certain charm and sets you apart from the rest you would have to hand over the dough.  These pants were over $500 each for the most part and I just can't justify that, unless they're on sale with a 50%-60% deduction (SHOP SALES PEOPLE..SHOP SALES).  Anyway it was definitely an interesting read..

Here are some of the excerpts:

"Never mind that classic button-fly chinos at Abercrombie & Fitch cost $70 or that Gap sells “original khakis” for $44.50. The fact that luxury chinos exist — and in surprising numbers — is another story, one that illustrates the challenge faced by designers to justify the still sky-high prices of their clothes. A distinctive design might strengthen the argument, but is $550 really a fair price for basic pants?

How about $480, for plain khakis from Michael Bastian? Or $495 for light cotton twill pants from Mary-Kate and Ashley Olsen of The Row? Or $595 if they are by Giorgio Armani? Or $780 for ones with elasticized cuffs from Bottega Veneta? Or is $350, as Thom Browne charges for chinos, the right price? The range suggests that since the luxury bubble burst, designers have no clue what customers are willing to pay.

“The cost of creating those things has nothing to do with the price,” said David A. Aaker, the vice chairman of Prophet, a brand consulting firm. “It is all about who else is wearing them, who designed them and who is selling them.”

“It sounds crazy to say this, I know, but our pants are a steal,” Mr. Sternberg said. To make his case, he gave a tour of the factory where they are made, Martin Greenfield in Bushwick, Brooklyn, where little has changed in the production of tailored clothing in a century.

A man was hovering over an 80-year-old contraption called a jump iron, hot enough to mold fabrics into shapes they will be unlikely to forget. Another man basted panels of suit fabric to springy canvas, which makes the garment more flexible. In a machine-made jacket, the canvas would be fused or glued into a suit.

Mr. Sternberg’s khakis are tailored like dress pants, and the details are largely sewn by hand, including buttonholes and split waistbands, which can be altered easily. The fabric, which costs $24 a yard, plus $3 a yard to import, is a cotton gabardine fine enough to withstand basting stitches. About two yards, counting for boo-boos and such, is used to make a pair of pants, so the fabric cost is $54."

AND LET ME KNOW WHAT YOU THINK! Does the craftsmanship justify the hike in price from something you could get at Marshalls, Winners, or Citi Trends?

Religious Tattoos

The idea of religious tattoos may seem counterintuitive, for several reasons – not only is tattooing prohibited by some religions, such as Orthodox Judaism, but until recently, tattoos were associated with a vaguely disreputable counterculture that seems at odds with religion.

The image “http://www.freetattoodesigns.org/images/religious-tattoos.jpg” cannot be displayed, because it contains errors.
Religious Tattoos

However, religious symbols – Christian, Hindu, Buddhist, Islam or otherwise – are actually quite common tattoo designs. It might surprise you that about 25% of all tattoos in America have a religious meaning

Tattoo ArtistBecoming a tattoo artist did a pretty interesting career. It is not like other careers or professions in general, have no special place like the University of tattoo art training or other educational institutions. 50 Cent's Tatoo covers most part of his body and look like a work of art. He has tattoo covering his arms, back and the front region of his body. He had some of the tattoo on his right arm removed as he was keen to pursue a career in Hollywood.

He thought that the tattoo could be a hindrance to his dreams of making it big in movies as a lot of time was spent on make up to cover his tattoo and had some of the prominent ones removed.

The tattoo on the back which is more famous and which sports the signature 50 cents and Southside are still present and are part of his overall personality and one cannot imagine him without these.

For a person who had quite a troubled childhood to rise to such fame is amazing and 50 cents whose albums Get rich or Die Tryin and the Massacrre were multi platinum selling hits.

You need to have a certain personality to carry off a tattoo and 50 cent does it in style. Lot of celebrities get some part of their bodies tattooed and after a period of time removes it.

Cloud 10 Status: Louis Vuitton iPad Cases

Damn yall remember I went IN on the iPad aka the iTampax back when Steve Jobs unveiled it (HERE) and I brushed the iPad aside as another useless invention that was pretty much a glorified iPod that you could see Kindle books better on and you could run a couple Apple apps.  Anyway between the constant barrage of iPad cases and the exclusivity of them I am starting to crumble under the weight of the Apple advertising machine.

I am here today to state unequivocally that I WANT AN iPad...don't you dare judge me.  I'm still allowed to change my mind right?  Anyway Louis Vuitton has created some handsome iPad cases that are supposed to retail for around...DRUM ROLL PLEASE...$280!

Now if you know Louis Vuitton and their head spinning prices this is definitely a bargain if I ever saw one.  Anyway someone buy me an iPad for Christmas please with the case.   The LV print along with the Damier graphite are available or will be soon.

Cloud 9 Status (Whisky Tango Foxtrot) |WTF|: Fish Leather

I don't know why but when I picked up my copy of today's Metro onmy commute to work and I saw the title "Kenya Hunt covers the surprising rise of fish leather." I was intrigued.  I tried and tried to look in the Metro but it turns out Kenya's story is in the form of a blog online.  So I decided to do my own research and discovered that there indeed is a growing field of products made out of the skin of all types of fish (freshwater, saltwater, Northern, Southern)

So how is fish leather made?  According to Sea Leather Wear "The tanning process for fish leather takes about a month, because every fish is different - saltwater, freshwater, northern, southern, and every one has a different oil content. None of these fish are on the endangered species list.

The fish skins are purchased from commercial fisheries and shipped frozen in 80 to 100 pound boxes. The secret is in the combination of chemicals that are used to remove all the fish oils so that there is no odor. Through an intricate 30-day chemical and mechanical process, the skins are churned, soaked, fleshed and vacuum dried. Timing is critical in the chemical soaking stage. If soaked too long, it will lose its strength and eventually fall apart. The flesher removes any "yuck" left on the back of the skin. The special tanning process prevents the fish leather from becoming stiff, once all the oils are taken out.
"

Hmmm very interesting indeed, still surprising that they could even achieve that as fish skin is very thin but more power to them.  Here are some sample pieces!  They even have a suede style fish skin leather!!
